Edith Jerome (1923 – 2016)

Edith Jerome grew up in Water Valley near Wetaskiwin, Alberta. She took art courses at the University of Alberta and was involved in the arts groups in Cochrane. Her works appeared in shows at the Banff School of Fine Arts, the state fair at Haines, a one-person show in Red Deer, and many shows in the Yukon. She worked as a telephone operator and as a certified nurse’s aide. She came north to work for her brother's outfitting business, working with horses and cooking in bush camps. She opened the Old Shanty Gallery in Dawson in 1976 and moved to Whitehorse in the 1980s. Edith was survived by brother and sister-in-law Chuck and Norma Burrell in Whitehorse and sister Doris Allen in Alberta.1)
