Frances Joe (1931 – 2015)

Frances Joe was born at Hutshi Village, the second eldest of a family of eight children born to Harry Joe and Jessie Hume. She and her parents trapped at Braeburn and Desadeash Lake. They also harvested salmon at Klukshu Village in the summer. She enjoyed sewing and craft work, picking berries, canning traditional foods, walking, showshoeing, and travelling to foreign lands. She was a great storyteller. She attended Chooutla Residential School in Carcross with her other siblings and later attended the Whitehorse Mission School in Whitehorse. She received a Diploma in Practical Nursing from the Yukon Vocational School in the early 1960s and worked at the Whitehorse General Hospital for thirty-five years. She never married but adopted two boys Kevin and Mike.1)
