Lorraine Kuhn (d. 2021)

Lorraine Kuhn attended the University of Alberta and completed a teaching degree in physical education. She was a duo-sport varsity athlete in volleyball and field hockey. She arrived in the Yukon in 1970 to teach at Takhini Elementary School. In the Yukon, she worked with Dave Stockdale to grow the Polar Games and coached and developed elementary-level volleyball and basketball teams. She also worked to create competitive experiences between schools.1)

Lorraine taught physical education at F.H. Collins from 1973 to 1979 and from 1985 to 2001. She exposed athletes to high-level competition outside the Yukon for the first time. In 1996, Lorraine and Gerry Kuhn with Mike Harper founded Volleyball Yukon. For many years Lorraine held the highest volleyball coaching certification in the territory. She supported those who wanted to play sports in the Yukon and looked for opportunities for them to play in competitions. She also helped and encouraged coaches to become better teachers of the game and brought up national-level coaches to assist in training. Former colleague Peter Cassidy said those coaches were great, but Lorraine was always better.2)

Lorraine Kuhn was inducted into the Yukon Sports Hall of Fame in 2021, the organization’s 40th anniversary.3)
