Douglas Roy Livingston (b. 1955)
Doug Livingston was born in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan to parents Elsie Anderson and Roy Livingston. He attended the University of Saskatchewan and the university of Oregon.1) In the Yukon, he was a teacher and school principal in Whitehorse. In 1996, he ran for the NDP in the Lake Laberge riding and won over incumbent Mickey Fisher (Yukon Party) by three votes.2) He was named speaker after Robert Bruce’s election was overturned in February 1997. Bruce was again the speaker after he won a by-election in April 1997.3) In November 1997, Livingston was recorded speaking in favour of the Crime Prevention and Victim Services Trust Act.4)
Livingston’s was supposed to be a four-year mandate, but he moved to the United States without notifying his constituents or then government leader Piers McDonald. It was revealed that Livingston was still collecting his MLA salary even as he was living in the States. His friends said he was disappointed when he was overlooked for selection in McDonald’s cabinet. Livingston resigned his seat in the assembly in August 1999.5)
