John Jeans Melville (1888 – 1918)
John Jean Melville was born in Elgin, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada and worked as a clerk in the Yukon and in Atlin, British Columbia. He enlisted in the First World War in June 1916. He was promoted to lance corporal in England, was deployed to France in May, and transferred to the 72nd Battalion. He was promoted to corporal and then sergeant in August 1918. Sergeant Melville was killed while in support of the Drocourt-Quéant Line trenches. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry. He is buried in the Wancourt British Cemetery in pas de Calais, France.1)
