Joseph Menzies
May Auston and Joseph Menzies were married in 1928 and then lived at Selwyn for a number of years, cutting wood for the steamboats. May Menzies recalled a settlement there of fourteen First Nation woodcutters working for Marshall. In 1937, the Menzies were living at Fort Selkirk and Joseph was running the T&D store. When their daughter became ill in the late 1930s, May took the children [Auston and Joyce] outside for medical treatment. In 1946, Joseph was in partnership with Frieda C. Schwartz, of New York, and mined about four miles above the mouth of the Selwyn River. He remained in the area for years before moving to Dawson where he died. The Menzies cabin was above the mouth of the Selwyn River.1)
Joe and May Menzies had two children Auston and Joyce. May’s sister, Grace Auston, donated photos of the family in the First Selkirk area and on their travels to the Yukon Archives, May Menzies fond, 78/23.
