Simon Mervyn (b. 1948)

Simon Mervyn, the son of Alice Buyck, was born in Mayo. He attended residential school at the Chooutla School for ten years in Carcross and was later educated as a mechanic and welder.1) In 1998, Mervyn was a Councillor with the Na-cho Nyäk Dun First Nation with a portfolio for Lands.2)

Simon Mervyn was the chief of the Mayo Indian Band in 1972. He took leave from his long-time job with Yukon Department of Highways to take on the role of Chief of the First Nation of Nacho Nyäk Dun in 2005 and was re-elected as chief in 2009 to another four-year term. His primary goals were to promote education, wellness, economic development, and policy initiatives. He was interested in ensuring that all levels of government lived up to their responsibilities and fiduciary obligations to First Nation peoples and felt that building stronger relationships with other First Nations was important.3) Mervyn was elected again as Chief in 2015 and 2019.4)
