Angus McLeod
Angus McLeod was born in Scotland.1)
In 1920, Angus was a mate on the sternwheeler Casca and at end of navigation was stationed at Lower Laberge to look after the White Pass & Yukon Route fleet of boats.2) That year, the Canadian and Whitehorse sailed to Hootalinqua at the end of October. The plan was that the Canadian would be put on the ways at Hootalinqua and the Whitehorse would return, with the Canadian crew, to Lake Lebarge where she would wait for the Nasutlin. The Nasutlin would go into winter quarters at Lebarge, and the Whitehorse would bring all the crews up to Whitehorse.3)
Angus worked as a deckhand on the Yukon River sternwheelers in the summer and ran the mail from Whitehorse to Livingstone by dog team in the winter. He and his wife Kitty lived at Lower Laberge for many years. Kitty was the daughter of Susie Boss and Sam Walker.4)
In early April 1921, watchman Angus McLeod was engaged in salvaging the frozen-in machinery and fittings from the sternwheeler Selkirk. The work was slow as it involved the use of pick and shovel.5)
In the 1920s, Angus and Kitty with other Ta'an people operated a fox and mink ranch at Lur dayel (31 Mile) on the Overland Trail. Lur dayel was the home of Mundessa, Kitty’s grandfather, until his death in 1925.6)
