Harrington “Harry” McLennan (1895 – 1915)
Harry McLennan and his family (parents Robert Purves and Bessie Archibald McLennan) moved to Dawson around 1901. Robert Purves McLennan became the second mayor of Dawson. Harry attended school in Dawson and then worked as a bank clerk. He enlisted for service in the First World War 1914 at Valcartier, Quebec where he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force, 16th Battalion.1) McLennan survived fierce fighting at Langemarck.2) The Germans used poison gas for the first time in April 1915. The 16th Battalion was out of the trenches at the time, and they rushed to counterattack. McLennan was killed during the action and he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal. His name is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres, Belgium.3)
