Ruth Chiyo Nagano (d. 1936)
Chiyo Nagano was born in Japan. She came to Haney, British Columbia to live with her parents in 1914. She came to Mayo in 1930 and was married to George Nagano, a well-known Mayo restaurant owner. Her children Margery, George Jr., and Jean were born in Mayo. Chiyo developed a bad cold which turned into pneumonia, and she died in the Mayo hospital. Her sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Miyo) and Renny Burian, lived in Mayo at the time. Japanese friends who attended the funeral included Jimmy Sugiyama, Massa Sakata, Fred Osato, Harry Ryoji, Miss Kay Omato, Miss Bessie Kika, S. Toyosaki, and Sam Harrada. The children were looked after by Miss Betty Kika who came to Mayo in the spring to act as a nurse.1)
