Hélène Saint Onge
Hélène Saint Onge came to the Yukon in 1984.1) She was involved in the francophone community right away and in 1985, Hélène Saint-Onge and Roger Bouchard hosted the radio show Rencontres.2)
Hélène worked as a French monitor and a teacher at Ecole Whitehorse Elementary School.3) She was the school’s principal in 2010 when she decided to increase the learning assistance company at the school and also increase her counselling. She developed a balanced literacy program at the expense of slightly larger class sizes and the decision caused some concern for parents.4)
Hélène co-founded Le Théâtre de la Pastèque and was a board member for Nakai Theatre. She played Emile Tremblay in a video about the francophone pioneer woman. She produced a musical, Le Petit Prince, with 450 French immersion students at the Yukon Arts Centre.5)
Hélène Saint Onge has received a national award from the Canadian French Language Teachers Association and a territorial education award. She was the president of the Association franco-yukonnaise and represented the Yukon on the boards of the National Francophone Parents Commission and the French-Canadian Cultural Federation.6)
