Don Palamar
Don Palamar entered the grocery business Whitehorse in 1970 when he was the manager of a Super Valu, owned by Loblaws. After two years working there, Don and his partner Bob Evans opened their own store.1) The success of the large Tourist Services grocery store meant the failure of the grocery lines for Taylor and Drury and the Northern Commercial Company.2) Taylor and Drury’s grocery department was sold to Palamar and Evans on 3 December 1973, ending seventy-three years of family direction.3)
Palamar and Evens took over Taylor and Drury’s space in Horwood’s Mall and called it Food Fair. Don’s son Mike was thirteen when he started working in the store and he and his brother bought out Evan’s share in 1985. They operated the store with their father until he retired around 2005. Food Fair moved to a Yukon Mall location on Second Avenue in 1991 when the Palamars sub-leased the space from Loblaws. Competition from Extra Foods and Superstore, both owned by Loblaws, finally forced the grocery store to close after thirty-seven years in business.4)
