Frances Elizabeth Portlock, nee Waugh (b. 1912)
Frances Waugh was born in Dawson to parents Elizabeth and Aaron Waugh. She and sister Millie were both raised in Dawson. After Aaron died in 1919, the family moved to the Carmacks area where Elizabeth operated roadhouses. Frances completed high school in Whitehorse and then trained as a registered nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital. She graduated in 1936 and, after working there for a year, applied for and accepted to work at the Mayo Hospital. Frances and Tom Portlock were married in 1937 in Mayo and moved to Whitehorse with one-year-old Franklin Thomas in 1942.1)
