Val Pike

Val Pike moved from Winnipeg where she began her career as a nurse and arrived in the Yukon in 1979. She had been working at St. Boniface Hospital and was tired of big hospitals. Soon after the move, she began working at the old Whitehorse General Hospital and thought she would stay for a year or so, but became anchored in the Yukon by a husband and five kids. She moved up the ranks from staff nurse on the medical ward to head nurse and then nursing supervisor. That position ended when the current hospital was built and Val moved to become community liaison, a role that soon included communications. Val eventually became the hospital's public representative and also put in many volunteer hours to raise money for the hospital including events like PARTY, Run for Mom, and Mardi Bra among others. She also volunteered for many sporting associations as the kids were growing. Val retired from her paying position in 2014.1)
