Joe Redmond (b. 1909)
Joe Redmond was an enterprising businessman in Dawson and owner of the B&F ice cream and confectionary store. Joe’s wife, Ginny, was the daughter of Ernest “Chappie” Chapman of Dawson. She was born in 1917 in Dawson. Joe and Jenny had two children born in Dawson: a girl born in 1940, and Joe Redmond Jr. born in 1943.1)
Joe Redmond was in the Dawson St. Mary’s Hospital when it burned in January 1950. He thought he had lost a valuable gold watch, chain and fob after he escaped his room in only his pajamas. The watch was given to him in 1942 by the Masonic Lodge in tribute for his work as Master. The engraving on the back was one of the last pieces of work by Charles Jeannerett, pioneer engraver. The watch was recovered by Sister Mary Clementia, music teacher and secretary for the Sisters of St. Ann when she was probing the ruins of the Catholic-run hospital. Joe Redmond Jr. still has the watch, a family heirloom with a neat history.2)
