Alexander David Stewart (1852 – 1899)
Alexander David Stewart was born in Leghorn, Italy. He trained as a doctor at the University of Edinburgh but did not practice medicine. He and Emily Mary Otter were married in 1878. In Canada, Stewart served for six years as the chief of the Hamilton, Ontario police. In 1885, he was the Marshall of the Court at the trial of Louis Riel. He served as the mayor of Hamilton, Ontario from 1894 to 1895.1) In October 1894, Stewart was secretary of a jockey club. He was charged with assault when he struck a man in the Jockey Club roadhouse. The Magistrate found Stewart guilty and fined him $1 and court costs.2) In 1898, Stewart joined the stampede to the Klondike. He died of scurvy in March 1899 on the Peel River. His last diary entry read that he had loose teeth and sore gums.3)
