Emma Ina Shorty, nee McGundy, Ka’ewa (1926 - 2016)
Ka’ewa Emma Shorty was born in Carmacks to parents Violet and Old McGundy. Her father died before she was born so his brother, Taylor McGundy, and her mother taught her stories and how to live on the land. She and her husband George Shorty had ten children and looked after many more who needed help. They hunted, trapped, and fished in places between Carmacks and Whitehorse. Emma remained fluent in Northern Tutchone and contributed to programs at the Yukon Native Language Centre. She is remembered for her kindness and generosity.1)
