Fred Stick Sr. (b. 1961)

Fred Stick was born in Whitehorse to parents Alice Stick and Hayden Woodruff. Fred was sent to the Chooutla Indian Residential School in Carcross when he was five or six years old. After two years he was transferred to the Coudert Indian Residential School in Whitehorse where he spent two years before he was transferred to the Yukon Hall residence in Whitehorse. One of his teachers, Steve Clappison, loaned him a camera and taught him how to use it. During the summer break, Stick worked for the Yukon Indian News and he took photographs for the paper. After he finished school, Fred worked there full-time for two years before he was switched to another department of the Ye Sa To Publications where he typed stories and developed photographs taken by other photographers. Stick retired to Canyon and continues to take photos as a hobby.1)
