Jan Stick

Jan Stick moved to the Yukon in 1980 and she and her husband, Ed, raised a son and daughter here. Jan worked the Yukon government as a social service case manager with disabled adults for sixteen years. She started volunteering with the weekend soup kitchen at its inception. In 1999, she and two partners established a used bookstore, Well Read Books. In this capacity she supported literacy and the arts in the Yukon.1)

Jan was elected to the Whitehorse City Council in 2005 and a general election in 2006 sent her back to council. She served on the City Operations and Community Services committees as well as the Association of Yukon Communities. She did not seek another term in the 2009 election.2)

In 2011, Stick was elected to the territorial legislature as the New Democratic Party (NDP) MLA for Riverdale South. She was the Official Opposition House Leader in the 33rd legislative Assembly and the caucus critic for Health and Social Services, the Ombudsman & Information and Privacy Commissioner, Poverty Elimination and Social Inclusion, and Small Business. She was a member of the NDP caucus until her defeat by a Liberal, and former Yukon Ombudsman, Tracy McPhee. in 2016, she returned to city politics as a councilor.3) She did not run in the 2021 municipal election.

Jan Stick was the recipient of the Yukon Commissioner’s Award for Public Service and the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award in 2004.
