Louie Smith, Áyenjiátà (b. 1932)

Louie Smith was born on the Teslin River at Dog Salmon Slough to Tàshura Mary Smith. She was from the Little Salmon area and was the daughter of Big Salmon Charlie. Louie’s father was Tl’ukshan Charlie Smith from the Lake Laberge area. The family tended fish nets at Little Salmon Slough in the summer, had a cabin at T’äw Tà’är (Winter Crossing), and a home in Whitehorse. Louie learned how to trap, hunt and fish with his parents and later worked at the Whitehorse waterfront and in highway construction. He is known for his fiddle playing and his wealth of stories that he shares with all who wish to learn.1)
