Richard Shorty (b. 1959)
Richard Shorty was born in Whitehorse and is Northern Tutchone of the Crow Clan. He is a self-taught artist who began painting in 1981 with the encouragement of Heiltsuk artist Ben Houstie. He moved to Victoria in 1983 to learn from other artists. He started carving and created work that is a combination of traditional west coast and realistic art. His limited edition print Frog was produced by the Leona Lattimer Gallery. In 2010, he helped to complete the largest mural in Vancouver on the side of the Orwell Hotel at Hastings and Jackson streets.1) Richard Shorty’s art pieces are collected internationally.2) His work is included in the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre permanent art collection.
