E. L. Thoms
E. L. Thoms was the proprietor of a roadhouse near the Indian River in 1912. He was robbed of $250 and suspected Roy Ayers and T.W.P. Smith. A patrol was sent upriver and met Ayers returning to Dawson. The money was found in his sock. He claimed there was a big drunk at the roadhouse and he had seen Smith take the money out of Thoms’ pocket. He and Smith were arrested and both were sent up for trial. Ayers was convicted and sentenced to three years hard labour. Smith was acquitted.1)
