Kathleen Wheeler, nee Ball (b. 1904)

Kathleen Ball came to Dawson in August 1925 to teach school. She taught grades 1 and 2 in 1925 and 1926 and stayed for a total of nine years. She started with 52 students as the families planning to go outside for the winter put their children in the Dawson school before leaving on the last boat in October. After that, the class shrunk to about 32 children. There were about 30 children living at the Anglican Hostel and some of her pupils came from there. Wheeler's students ranged from age 6 to 15, five of whom did not speak English.1)

Kathleen married Jack Wheeler, the manager of the Canadian Bank of Commerce.2) Jack and Kathleen Wheeler lived in a house now called the Lachapelle House in Dawson. Jack Wheeler was transferred to Nelson, British Columbia in 1934. The couple was married for almost 30 years when Jack died in 1956.3)
