Owen Pierce Williams (1905 – 1969)

Owen Williams was born in llansair, Anglesey, North Wales and came to the Yukon in 1923. His uncle, Joe Williams, was a bookkeeper with Taylor and Drury, and later became a customs agent. Owen worked for White Pass & Yukon Route before starting with Taylor and Drury where he worked in the grocery department and then managed the store at Champagne. He worked on the construction of the Burwash airstrip for Pan American Airways. Returning to Whitehorse, he joined the Northern Commercial Company and, over twenty years, worked his way up to manager.1)

In 1955, Owen started as a city works employee and became the department superintendent in 1958. Owen died on the job, under considerable stress with the growing responsibilities of a growing community. That week, the city was in the process of hiring an assistant. Owen was a member of the vestry and a warden in the Old Log Church. Williams Street in the Logan subdivision is named for Owen Williams.2)
