J. R. Alguire

J.R. Alguire, accompanied by Captain P. Martin, made a fourteen-hour trip from Whitehorse to Champagne in Alguire’s Ford car in 1914. A recent rain and deep ruts that had to be filled made the car hard to handle. The return trip was made in six and a half hours, and Mr. Alguire thought that with a little repair of the road, the trip could be made in four hours.1) In 1915, Alguire had a small fox farm in Whitehorse. There were four black and silver fox and ten cross fox.2)

The Alguires owned the only laundry and the W.H. Theatre in Whitehorse when Goody Sparling was young. Audry Ryder (Roth) and Goody were the first usherettes in the theatre and got to see every movie that came to town.3) The theatre, built by J.R. Alguire, officially opened on 5 June 1937.4) Sam McClimon took over the old Whitehorse Theatre on Third Ave from J. R. Alguire in 1941. This building was later operated by the Elks and moved to Sixth Avenue where it became an apartment building. 5)

J.R. Alguire, general merchant, minted an aluminium coin, good for 25 cents.6)
