Solomon Albert (1860 - 1943)

Solomon Albert was a prospector in the upper White River and Tanana River areas [around 1913?]. He became ill one time on the White River Trail when he was on his way into Dawson. The was frostbitten and starving when he met two prospectors who carried him eight miles to their main camp. They left Albert there and carried on to find help. They went twenty-eight hard miles and found Billy Roup who was headed up the White River with a team of horses. He sent one of his men to alert the RCMP and the rescue party found Albert still alive beside a fire. He had eaten his pet dog to save his life. They started back down the White and met the RCMP with a four-dog team at the mouth of the river. Solomon Albert was taken to the Dawson hospital where he recovered but lost all of his toes on both feet. He continued to live in the upper White River area and managed to get around by sewing bear’s paws into his moccasins.1) A photo showing Albert’s bear feet is held by the Dawson Museum.2)
