Angélique Bernard (b. 1972)

Angélique Bernard was born in Brossard, on the south shore of Montreal. She arrived in the Yukon on a four-month translation internship with the Bureau of French Language Services in 1995. She returned to Whitehorse in 1995 after graduating from Concordia University with a BA. She worked as a development officer for the non-profit group Les EssentiElles from 1996 to 2001, representing the interests of Yukon’s French-speaking women. She operated her own translation firm from 2000 to 2018. From 2005 to 2012, she was a free-lance court recorder for bilingual and French trials. From 2010 to 2017, she was president of the Board of Directors of the Association franco yukonnaise (AFY). For twenty years, Bernard hosted the weekly francophone radio show on CBC North and acted in and produced many plays in French. From 2000 to 2005, she was a member of the National Board of Directors of the Canadian Women’s Health Network. She was president of the Whitehorse Women’s Soccer Association in 1998 and 1999. She was an athletics coach with the Yukon Special Olympics in 1996 and 1997. Angélique Bernard is widely recognized for her community work and dedication to francophone rights. Her term as Yukon Commissioner started in March 2018 [2018 – 2023]. Angélique and husband David Comchi have two children.1) She is the first francophone Commissioner in Yukon’s history and the youngest commissioner to serve in any of the three northern territories.2)
