Billy Gai Blair Jr. (d. 2001)
Billy Gai was born in Snag to Tilly Enoch and trader Jack Dolan. Billy's mother died when he was young and he was raised by his grandmother, Annie Enoch, until he was adopted by William Blair and his wife. Blair and his partner purchased Dolan's trading post at Snag. Billy Gai took the name Billy Blair Jr. The family lived off the land and ran the trading post until the airstrip closed in 1962. They moved to Beaver Creek and Billy Jr. attended school in Dawson and lived at St. Paul's Anglican Hostel. He became ill with polio there and, after treatment, attended school in Skagway, Alaska. In the 1970s, he worked as an environmental assistant for the Foothills Pipeline assessment.1)
In the 1970s, Billy was on the Board and served as president of the Beaver Creek YANSO Local. Their projects included building and renovating homes for Non Status people, fire smarting, and beautifying the community. He served as the Kluane Tribal Brotherhood Chief when the Burwash people opened their own school in the community. He participated in the 1980s amalgamation of YANSI, YNB, and CYI to form a new CYI leading the land claims process. Billy was co-chair with Stan Peters when White River First Nation separated from the Kluane Tribal Council and became the 14th Yukon First Nation. He was councillor with the White River First Nation when he passed in 2001.2)
