Chuck Buchanan (1950 – 2013)

Chuck Buchanan was a talented taxidermist and passed that skill on to his son Shane. Chuck was also an accomplished carver with pieces that are part of Yukon's Permanent Art Collection. He founded the Yukon Museum of Natural History, better known as the Caribou Crossing Trading Post, in Carcross. Greg McHale purchased the business from the Buchanans in 2012. He credited Chuck and his wife Marilyn with creating the tourism industry in the Southern Lakes Region. In the early years, about thirty tourists stopped by and today there could be 1,000 on a good day. Shane was the co-owner and operator of Moon Lake Outfitters Ltd located in northern British Columbia, west of Atlin and east of Primrose Lake. Chuck and Shane Buchanan were killed in a plane accident in Saskatchewan in June 2013.1)

Chuck’s sculpture Prospector and his Dog is located next to the federal building on Main Street in Whitehorse.
