Charles Edward “Chuck” Bullen (1946 – 2011)

Chuck Bullen was born in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, the only child of Sidney and Winifred Bullen. His family moved to farm in Abbottsford, British Columbia in 1952. In 1967, Chuck joined the Canadian Imperial Bank of Canada (CIBC) and was transferred to the Dawson branch in 1968. He worked for the bank for eight months and then worked at the DCW Store and then the Downtown Hotel as a bartender. He and Kathy (“Katie”) were married in 1973 and they had two children Donna (Marcel) and Darren. In 1974, Chuck was hired as the first manager and maintenance man of Yukon Housing in Dawson, and he worked off and on for them for seventeen years. He also worked a variety of jobs and took oil burner mechanic training before starting at Yukon Government Property Management. He was responsible for boilers from Pelly Crossing to Old Crow and spent many hours on call during his nineteen years of service.((Charles Edward Bullen: March 20, 1946 – March 3, 2011.” The Klondike Sun (Dawson), 23 March 2011.)

Chuck spent time building his home and working in his garden where he tried many varieties of new plants. He also enjoyed reading history and watching history programs. When his family was young, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and experimented with food preservation and later wine and beer making. In 1993, he completed a home on the Dome and the family moved up the hill where he expanded his gardens. He retired in 2008 and co-workers gave him a new greenhouse.((Charles Edward Bullen: March 20, 1946 – March 3, 2011.” The Klondike Sun (Dawson), 23 March 2011.)
