Velma Irene Becker (1935 – 2007)

Velma Irene Becker was born in Cranbrook, British Columbia to Fred and Ethel Becker. She arrived in Whitehorse in 1940 and lived her entire life here. She has been called one of the Colourful 5% and this would have pleased her very much. Velma was very involved at Mary House, the 2nd Opinion Society, the Salvation Army, the Victoria Faulkner Women's Centre, and the Anti-Poverty Coalition.1) She was known to have a passionate voice raised on many community concerns.2) Becker was a past member of the Eastern Star, following in her mother's footprints, and a proud member of the Grace Community Church.3)
