John Charlais

John Charlais had a large garden opposite Klondike City at the steamboat slough (Sunnydale) in 1901. He had ten acres fenced and eight under cultivation. He had about two acres each in cabbage and turnips, three acres in oats, and a half acre in carrots. He also had 1,000 cauliflower and nearly half of them produced excellent heads, some as big as eight inches in diameter. Many of the cabbages and turnips weighed five and six pounds each and some of the cabbages were twenty pounds each. One monster, with leaves that spread five feet, was put on exhibit in Dawson and was thought to weigh thirty pounds. Charlais had six tons of cabbage, eight tons of turnips, and one ton of carrots stored for winter use.1)
