James Stuart Ross Cuthbert (1895 – 1917)

Stuart Ross Cuthbert was born in Fort MacLeod, Alberta, the son of Albert Edward Cuthbert (Assistant Commissioner of the Royal North-West Mounted Police) and Charlotte Alice Cuthbert. Stuart attended school in Dawson. He worked as a clerk for the Bank of Montreal in Dawson before he enlisted to serve in the First World War. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Regina in 1915 and was taken on strength to the 10th Canadian Mounted Rifles as a trooper. He was promoted to lieutenant in September 1915 and transferred to the 28th Battalion overseas in August 1916. He fought with his unit at the Battle of the Somme. He returned to Canada to transfer to the Royal Flying Corps in September 1917 and died in a plane crash during training in Fort Worth, Texas. He is buried in Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth.1)
