Janet Couture

Janet Couture was born in Edmonton, Alberta where she met and married Rudy Couture. They moved to Watson Lake in 1954 and have also lived in Faro and Whitehorse. Janet worked as an agent for Northern Freightways, was the post mistress at Watson Lake, and was a manager for Murdoch's Gem Shop. She is active in the church and with several sporting groups.1)

The Yukon tartan was designed by Jan Couture of Watson Lake in 1965 and was first proposed as the official territorial tartan during the 1967 Canadian centennial celebrations. The 1967 Territorial Council rejected the tartan because they were concerned that a private individual would hold the copyright for the design. The tartan registry rejected the design because it was a plaid not a tartan. The revised tartan design was accepted by the King of Arms of Her Majesty's New Registry House in Edinburgh in October 1984, and the Yukon Tartan Act was passed by the Yukon Legislature on 29 November 1984. The blue represents Yukon’s sky and glacier-fed waters, the magenta represents fireweed, Yukon’s flower. The white represents snow, and the yellow represents the midnight sun.2)
