Linda Chudy (1940 – 2012)

Linda Chudy was born in Dawson, one of ten children born to Alice Semple and Happy Jack Lasky. She grew up at Moosehide, travelling with the family to hunt, fish, and pick berries. She had her own dog team when she was a youth. “Ganna Bannock” was an excellent cook and care giver at the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in culture camps and is remembered for her entertaining jokes and teasing. She met future husband Fred Chudy Sr. when she was young and they lived in the bush and in small mining communities, gold mining, trapping, cutting wood, and hunting, until Fred died in 1997. They raised seven children who learned honesty and the need to care for others. Linda always helped her sister Peggy Kormandy cutting, preparing, and smoking salmon, cutting and drying moose meat, and travelling on the family trap line. “Momma Chudy” was a caring and social person who liked events, Gerties, and the Westminster. She was a mentor and a role model who shared her experiences and stories with young people.1)
