Marie-Hélène Comeau (b. 1969)
Marie-Hélène Comeau was born in Montreal, Québec.1) She loved art in public school, but she trained as a dental hygienist.2) She arrived in the Yukon in 1992.3)
Marie-Hélène worked at the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) in family literacy and was the first official journalist for l’Aurore boréale. At the age of 40, she left a job as a journalist, completed a B.A. in [anthropology], and went on to complete a Ph.D in art at the Université du Quebec in Montreal.4) Her thesis focused on the social role that an artist can play in a community.5)
Marie-Hélène’s art is inspired by the Yukon landscape and the sense of community she finds in the people.6) She is known for her paintings but she also has done installations, printing, and community art work.7)
