Radivoje M. “Harry Melin” Chaetkovich (1889 – 1918)

Radivoje Chaetkovich was born in Montenegro to parents Milan and Yoka Chetkovich of Boan, Uskosi. He immigrated to Canada and was working as a labourer in Dawson when he joined the 231st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force in July 1916. He enlisted as Harry Melin. He transferred to the Yukon Infantry Company in October 1916. He arrived in Liverpool, England in February 1917 and was taken on strength to the 7th Reserve Battalion. He was promoted to lance corporal and posted to the 17th Canadian Machine Gun Company at Seaford, England in March 1917where he reverted to the rank of private at his own request. He was deployed to France with the 2nd Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade in March 1918 where he caught pneumonia and died. Harry Melin is commemorated on the Dawson City War Memorial.1)
