Robert Neil DeArmond (1911 - 2010)
Bob DeArmond was born in Sitka and was raised there and in Tacoma, Washington. He returned to Sitka after college and worked in the fishing industry for twelve years. The DeArmond family moved to Ketchikan in 1944 and Robert started a career in journalism. He worked for the Ketchikan Daily News and the Juneau Empire, and covered the Alaska Territorial Legislature for other publications. Over seven hundred of his columns were put online in the Digital Bob project sponsored by the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. He was a prolific writer for regional publications.1)
DeArmond had a long career as an Alaskan journalist, author, historian, and editor and he was an excellent photographer. He served as secretary to Alaska governor B. Frank Heintzleman in 1953. He was married to artist Dale DeArmond for more than sixty years. Bob helped to get the Alaska Historic Preservation Act and legislation creating the Alaska Historical Commission passed and was vice-chair of the commission for many years. He helped reorganize the Alaska Historical Society in 1967. His books included Stroller White: Klondike Newsman and he edited The Alaska Sportsman and The Alaska Journal. Bob DeArmond encouraged and helped many Alaska historians.2)
