Richard Alfred Dickson (b. 1921)

Richard Dickson was born at Kluane Lake to father Thomas Dickson. He went to school in Dawson and lived at St. Paul’s Anglican hostel for eight years. Richard bought outfitting concession #10 from his brother Buck in 1959. This hunting area was pioneered in 1902 by their father and Richard built a well-respected outfitting business there.1)

Dickson was president of the Yukon community of Tlingit-Haida. He thought that Tlingit ancestors living in Canada were entitled to $1 million of the $7.5 million judgement the U.S. Court of Claims awarded the Tlingit and Haida people in Alaska in 1968. The settlement was in payment for the land withdrawal to create the Tongass National Forest and Glacier Bay National Monument. Dickson and Johnnie Johns collected 1,700 names. Erick Oles and Bessie and Bonar Cooley helped with the project and Reg Kelly was hired to research names in British Columbia. Dickson donated the list to the Yukon Archives.2)

In 1989, Richard sold his outfitting business to his son Dave Dickson and his family, and they continue this long tradition of providing hunting and other outdoor experiences.3)
