Elizabeth Belle “Liz” Ewing, nee Grant (1909 – 1959)

Elizabeth Grant was born in Dawson to John and Mary Grant. Elizabeth’s uncle was Robert Henderson, 1896 co-discoverer of Klondike gold. John Grant was one of twelve men who died when twenty-one Yukon Gold employees were afflicted with ptomaine poisoning. After Elizabeth’s mother died, her eldest brother raised her eight children with Liz and her sister Esther taking turns away from school. Their youngest sibling was just over a year old. Liz and Sergeant Harry Ewing were married in 1928 and they lived in Dawson for two years before Harry was posted to other military bases in Canada. After Harry retired from the army they moved briefly to Quebec before returning to the Yukon and settling in Mayo where Harry was a civilian in charge of the weather station. The family moved to Bedford, Quebec in 1947 and returned to Mayo in 1949 where they established Ewing Transport. This became a well-established family business, later operated by Dick Ewing, Liz and Harry’s grandson.1)
