Ella Dorreene Wahl, nee Fleming (1926 - 1999)

Dorreene Wahl was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba and received degrees in education from Brandon College and the University of Manitoba. She taught in rural schools in Manitoba and moved to Whitehorse in 1950. Dorreene and Herb Wahl were married in 1953. She helped establish the United Church in Whitehorse.1)

Dorreene was a talented athlete, strong in basketball and curling. She was instrumental in establishing the Yukon Ladies Curling Association and her team represented the Yukon-NWT several times at the national level. She was inducted into the Yukon Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and, in 1995, she was awarded the Bert Boyd Memorial Trophy, the first woman to receive it.2)
