Robert George Ellis (1881 – 1916)
Robert Ellis was born in Sale, Australia. He was a stationary engineer in Dawson before he enlisted to serve in the First World War. He joined the Yukon Motor Machine Gun Battery in November 1914 in Vancouver and was transferred to the Eaton Battery in 1915 and to Lord Strathcona’s Horse Reserve Regiment in 1916. He re-joined the Yukon Motor Machine Gun Battery in July 1916. His unit came under artillery fire in the trenches near Courcelette where Ellis died of head wounds. He was awarded the British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal. He is buried in Albert Communal Cemetery Extension in Somme, France.1)
