Sue Edelman

Sue Edelman was a Whitehorse city councillor from 1988 to 1994. In 1996, she was elected to the territorial council in the riding of Riverdale South. She and her father, Jack Cable, were two of the three Liberals elected; the third was future party leader, premier, and senator, Pat Duncan. Jack Cable and Sue Edelman were the first examples in Canada of a father and daughter sitting together in a legislative assembly. While in office, Edelman raised issues around the environment, poverty, and care for seniors. She introduced an amended Children’s Act that acknowledged the rights of grandparents during custody hearings. The bill passed first, second, and third readings in a single day. She was the Minister of Tourism before moving to Health and Social Services, workman’s compensation, and women’s issues. Edelman offered her resignation from women’s issues after mistakenly labelling some groups as extremist in an email to cabinet staff. She was Yukon’s election returning officer from 2007 to 2018.1)
