Margaret Olive Fry, nee Boutillier (1912 – 2005)

Margie Boutillier was born in Whitehorse in 1912 to parents Maude Graves and Charles Franklin Boutillier. Margie was two when she and her family floated down the Yukon River to Dawson. The family lived downtown before moving to a large home on the hill behind Dawson, near the cemeteries. Margie attended the Dawson Public School.1) Margie worked at the Telephone Office in Dawson for Yukon Consolidated Gold Corp (YCGC).2) She and Art were married in 1934 and raised five children. Daryl Arthur (June), Diane Rosemary Margaret Toth, Dale Sharon, Dalwyn Noel (Kery), and Daphne Dawn Sheryl (George) Law. All of the children attended the Dawson Public School.3)

Art Fry quit his job as a winchman at #4 Dredge on Bonanza Creek in 1952 and he and Margie went mining full time. In the late 1950s, Margie returned to work at the telephone exchange for some years while she also tended the sluice box and continued to help at clean-ups until well into her eighties.4)

Margie and Art were very involved with the Dawson youth. She provided activities for non-boxers while Art was holding training sessions. In 1948, the Frys moved into town from their home on the Old Klondike Road, renamed in their honour. They later moved to live near Margie’s sister near the Ogilvie Bridge. Art passed away just after he and Margie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at McDonald Lodge. Margie moved into the Lodge in September 1994.5) Margie lived in Dawson until 1999, when she returned to Whitehorse to reside at the Thomson Centre. She is remembered for her musical talent, her hospitality to anyone who stopped by, and her great sense of humour.6)
