Hugh C. M. Grant

Hugh Grant came from Saskatchewan. He and his family came to Carcross in 1929 where Grant was the Anglican Archdeacon of the Diocese for Yukon and superintendent at the Chooutla Indian Residential School. Hugh and his wife moved to Whitehorse in 1948 where they purchased a historic house on Hanson Street.¹⁾ Grant gave up his church work to become a government customs officer. In 1959, he became the organist and choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Whitehorse. In 1963, Grant agreed to a request from Bishop Henry H. Marsh, Bishop of Yukon, to return to active duty in the church and became an honorary assistant to Canon Arthur L. Privett. He continued working as a customs agent and remained organist and choirmaster at the cathedral. Mrs. Grant was the President of the Diocesan Board of the Women’s’ Institute in the Yukon.²⁾
