John C. Green (1875 – 1918)
John Green was captain of the sternwheeler Yukon in the fall of 1918. He had worked on steamers since 1890, following in the footsteps of his father, a well-known Seattle steamboat man. He sometimes operated his own steamers but usually worked as a river boat pilot starting in 1897.1) Harriet Dayton and John Green were married in 1900 in Seattle.2)
Captain Green started with the White Pass & Yukon Route in 1912 and spent the winters in Seattle.3) He was the master of the SS Yukon.4) He owned several mining properties in Alaska operated on his behalf by his wife Harriet. She spent her summers there and they both went out in the fall. Harriet and John were on the sternwheeler Yukon on her last trip upriver in 1918. They died on the Princess Sophia when it sank in the Lynn Canal.5)
