Leonard Ginzberg

Leonard Ginzberg and Margaret Mitchell were partners on a mining claim in Dawson on 49 Gulch off of Bonanza Creek. Mitchell was known as the Quartz Queen for the number of claims she staked and sold. Ginzberg protested when Mitchell sold their claim, saying he had spent $200 working on the property. He asked that the sale be set aside, and a new grant be issued in both their names. There is no note on the outcome of his protest.1) Fla Jampolsky says that Ginzberg was a Polish Jew and that he and his family sold their mining claim and left Dawson without paying their bills. Jampolsky also says that naming the claim location as Jew Hill illustrated the antisemitic sentiment of the time and the ongoing derogatory use of the word “Jew.”2) Mitchell’s business practices were well known in Dawson at the time.3)
