A. P. Hawes

A.P. Hawes was a veterinarian for the White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR) and inspector for the Department of Agriculture. He bought the historic Smith House on Third Avenue in Whitehorse in 1909.1) Hawes looked after the company’s 300 horses and also ran an office out of his house to care for community pets.2) Hawes left the Yukon after WP&YR stopped using horses on the Overland Trail in 1923.3)
