Edna Bernadine Holway, Glukama (1934 – 2024)

Edna Holway was born in Whitehorse to Berth Smith and Nels Nielsen. She was Wolf Clan and a member of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations. She met and married Walt Holway in 1855 and they were inseparable for fifty-three years. Edna worked as supervisor at the Westmark Klondike Inn laundry and she stories about Yukon history at MacBride Museum. She was artistic, well-read, and a poet.1)

Walt retired in 1991 and he and Edna moved to Atlin. She said it was the best fourteen years of her life with wonderful times and good friends. Walt passed in 2008, and Edna lived independently in Porter Creek and then in an apartment on Front Street. She was familiar sight walking around downtown, sharing stories about her youth in the area, and she appreciated the view of the river and Shipyards Park. She had a great sense of humour and a quick wit.2)
