John Gilmore Hay (1873 – 1916)

John Gilmore Hay was born in Chatham, Ontario. He gained a law degree from Osgoode Hall and practiced law in Toronto and Vancouver, where he was a city solicitor. He practiced law in Dawson, moved back to Vancouver as a corporate lawyer for the Honourable Joseph Martin, and then set up a private office.1) He was active in the militia in November 1915 when he enlisted to serve in the First World War.2) He was married and living in Vancouver when he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in New Westminster, British Columbia. He became a lieutenant in the 47th Battalion. He was deployed to France and fought in the Somme offensive. He was wounded in the attack on Regina Trench near Courcelette and died in hospital in November 1916. John Gilmour Hay is buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension in Somme, France.3)
